House Panel Backs Abortion Limits On US-Run Health Plans

Law360, New York (June 20, 2012, 8:00 PM EDT) -- Federally administered health plans sold on state insurance exchanges would be completely blocked from covering abortions under legislation advanced Wednesday by Republicans on the U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Committee.

The restriction, attached to a $21 billion funding package for the U.S. Treasury Department, U.S. General Services Administration and other agencies, would apply to multistate policies intended to ensure competition in the states’ Web-based insurance marketplaces.

The amendment, put forth by Rep. Alan Nunnelee, R-Miss., passed on a 28-20 vote.
