GAO Tells HHS To Improve Oversight Of Patients' Drug Info

Law360, New York (June 22, 2012, 6:32 PM EDT) -- The Government Accountability Office on Friday said the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services must strengthen its policies for helping entities protect Medicare beneficiaries’ prescription drug use information and for auditing those entities’ compliance with security requirements.

The GAO said in a report that while the department has established a framework for protecting individuals’ private information, it has not implemented all of the oversight capabilities or issued the proper guidance for covered entities, such as health care providers and pharmacies, required under the Health Insurance...
