EU, Australia Introduce New Sanctions Against Syria

Law360, New York (June 25, 2012, 5:08 PM EDT) -- The European Union and Australia both announced Monday they would impose additional sanctions against Syria meant to place pressure on Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime to fall in line with a United Nations-backed peace plan.

The EU's high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, Catherine Ashton, said in a statement that the sanctions would continue for a 16th round, adding that "escalating violence" carried out by the Assad regime in Syria was a driving factor for continuing and expanding the trade restrictions.
