U.S. Funding Bill Would Ban Embryo Patents

Law360, New York (November 17, 2003, 12:00 AM EST) -- In a quiet move that will bring the debate over patents on human embryos to the political center stage, Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) has submitted "clarifying language" for a Senate appropriations bill to ban such patents, the Washington Post reported Monday.

Senate leaders indicated they will push to complete action on the spending bill this week, according to the newspaper. Some political observers have voiced concern that an issue of such ethical and scientific magnitude should be treated in an obscure appropriations bill.
