Switzerland Mulls $2.9B Plan For 2nd Gotthard Tunnel

Law360, New York (June 27, 2012, 7:02 PM EDT) -- The Swiss government on Wednesday recommended building a second Gotthard road tunnel through a heavily traveled part of the Alps for approximately 2.8 billion francs ($2.9 billion), rather than repairing the existing tube.

The notoriously congested Gotthard road tunnel, which opened in 1980, is a key north-south European transportation axis between Zurich and Milan that cuts under the Gotthard mountain pass and serves as the most direct route between parts of Germany and northern Italy.
