China Defends Rare Earth Export Restrictions

Law360, New York (June 29, 2012, 2:30 PM EDT) -- China said Friday that it would “carefully study” a World Trade Organization challenge by the U.S., the European Union and Japan over export restrictions on rare earth elements, once again arguing that the measures are aimed at protecting the environment rather that economic protectionism.

The three countries asked the world body on Wednesday to begin a formal dispute resolution after talks in March failed to address their claims that China has been restricting global access to sought-after materials to provide its manufacturers with a competitive advantage...
