Sen. Pushes Labeling Rule To Curb Infant Drug Withdrawal

Law360, New York (July 5, 2012, 8:22 PM EDT) -- If a high-ranking U.S. senator gets his way, drug labels could soon carry much more information detailing the potential risks to pregnant women and their unborn babies, a move doctors said Thursday could help ease the spike in babies born addicted to prescription painkillers.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., chairman of the Senate Democratic Policy Committee, has asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to finalize a long-dormant rule, proposed in 2008, that would replace the often-confusing pregnancy categories on drug labels with more detailed information about...
