Bill Proposes Credits For Energy-Saving Utilities

Law360, New York (September 24, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has introduced a bill into the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and National Resources to amend the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978 to update efficiency standards for electricity and gas retailers by using a tradeable credit system to encourage energy savings.

Schumer's bill, designated S. 2079, would make gas and electric utilities find ways to conserve energy by having the Secretary of Energy issue credits to utilities for demonstrating energy savings. At the end of each year, utilities would have to...
