High Court Shakes Head At Big Tobacco's Appeal Bid

Law360 (October 1, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In a blow to the tobacco industry, the United States' highest court has declined to hear an appeal of a Florida state court’s ruling last year allowing more than half a million smokers to bring new cases against a group of tobacco companies following its rejection of a $145 billion jury verdict in a long-running class action lawsuit.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday denied R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.’s May 21 petition for writ of certiorari, giving no further elaboration on its decision.
