Old Mining Law Under New Scrutiny

Law360, New York (October 3, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Under the Mining Law of 1872, which remains largely on the books, miners can extract gold, uranium and other hard-rock minerals without paying any royalties to the U.S. government. That may soon change, however, as lawmakers have begun pushing for new legislation that would put the hard-rock mining industry on similar terms as the coal, oil and natural gas industries.
