Brazilian Judge Halts Vale's Rail Expansion

Law360, New York (August 2, 2012, 10:34 PM EDT) -- A Brazilian federal judge has blocked mining company Vale SA from expanding a rail line in northern Brazil, ruling the expansion would harm a dwindling indigenous community in its path.

In a ruling filed July 26 in the Eighth Federal Court of Maranhao, Judge Ricardo Rodrigues Macieira revoked the license granted by Brazil's environmental agency, known as IBAMA, because the licensing process had failed to consider the environmental impacts of Vale's plan to double the Carajas Railroad and had not adequately involved the public in the...
