Ex-Newark Mayor Breached Campaign Finance Law, Judge Says

Law360, New York (August 17, 2012, 8:28 PM EDT) -- A judge ruled Friday that former Newark, N.J., Mayor Sharpe James violated the state's campaign finance law by using $94,000 in campaign funds to pay for legal defense costs during a criminal investigation in 2006 and 2007.

Handing summary judgment to the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission in its suit against the former state senator and his campaign treasurer at the time, Judge Harriet F. Klein ordered a $94,000 reimbursement to the campaign account and assessed $30,000 in civil penalties.
