Butamax Continues Biofuel Patent Crossfire With New Suit

Law360, New York (August 7, 2012, 5:28 PM EDT) -- DuPont Co. subsidiary Butamax Advanced Biofuels LLC sued rival company Gevo Inc. for patent infringement Monday, the latest lawsuit in the two companies' ongoing dispute over technology for creating an ethanol-alternative biofuel.

Butamax — a joint venture of DuPont and BP PLC — says Gevo is creating isobutanol by using a yeast that contains Butamax's patented ketol-acid reductoisomerase enzymes, or KARI enzymes. The yeast structure is described in the company's U.S. Patent Number 8,222,017, issued last month.
