Italian Shipping Co. To Pay $1M For Criminal Oil Discharges

Law360, Chicago (August 16, 2012, 2:40 PM EDT) -- An Alabama federal judge ordered Giuseppe Bottiglieri Shipping Co. SpA to cough up a $1 million criminal fine on Wednesday for falsifying records in order to hide oily wastewater discharges from one of the company's ships into the ocean.

U.S. District Judge Ginny Granade also ordered the Italian shipping company to serve four years of probation, during which it must launch an environmental compliance plan, and to cough up a $300,000 community service payment to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for the single count of...
