States Draw More Captive Insurers, But Face Learning Curve

Law360, New York (August 20, 2012, 10:04 PM EDT) -- More companies are choosing the U.S. over offshore locations like Bermuda as the home base for their captive insurers, signaling that states' efforts to facilitate self-insurance arrangements are paying off, though many are still playing catch-up in learning how to regulate captives, experts say.

Companies that have trouble finding their own insurance or those that make a business decision to self-insure traditionally have headed offshore to establish their own insurance companies, called captives.
