Barge Co. Demands Shipping Cos. Pay For Hurricane Crashes

Law360, New York (September 6, 2012, 2:03 PM EDT) -- Barge operator AEP River Operations LLC lodged a pair of suits against shipping companies Sanko Steamship Co. and Gestion Maritime SAM and their respective insurers in Louisiana federal court Wednesday, demanding they cover the costs of separate collisions that wrecked AEP barges during Hurricane Isaac.

The bulk cargo carrier ships Sanko Mineral M/V and Ines Corrado M/V crashed into two AEP barges that were both stationary and “properly moored,” causing the vessels to sink, according to the suit. The collisions allegedly occurred on the Mississippi River...
