E.U. Court Rules for Czech Brewer in Dispute Over Budweiser Trademark

Law360, New York (November 19, 2003, 12:00 AM EST) -- A Czech-Austrian agreement from 1976 still protects the brand names of Czech brewery Budejovicky Budvar, the European Union's Court of Justice ruled on Tuesday.

The court said it acknowledged Austria's obligation even though it is in conflict with the E.U. regulation on free movement of goods.

However, the ruling was not an all-out victory for the Czech brand, long embroiled in a global legal battle with U.S. brewer Budweiser over the right to the "Bud" beer trademark.
