EU Lawmakers Vote To Strengthen Drug Safety Regime

Law360, New York (September 11, 2012, 8:18 PM EDT) -- European lawmakers on Tuesday approved new rules designed to speed up the withdrawal of unsafe drugs from the market in an effort to prevent cases mirroring that of the now-banned diabetes treatment Mediator, which has been linked to more than 500 deaths over three decades.

The European Parliament adopted a regulation and a directive that will implement an automatic emergency procedure when a medicinal product is withdrawn from the market by one EU member state or when a drugmaker decides not to renew a marketing authorization...
