Consumer Reports Urges Arsenic Limits In Rice Products

Law360, New York (September 19, 2012, 2:56 PM EDT) -- Watchdog group Consumer Reports pressed regulators Wednesday to establish federal limits for arsenic in rice products and encouraged consumers to limit rice consumption after testing of more than 200 samples of such products revealed “worrisome” levels of the toxic chemical.

Lab testing of popular products comprising a “snapshot of the market” — including infant cereals, rice cakes, rice flour and rice-based drinks — uncovered measurable amounts of both carcinogenic inorganic arsenic and less-toxic organic arsenic, for which no federal limit exists, according to a report set...
