Breast Implant Scandal Spurs EU To Strengthen Device Regs

Law360, New York (September 26, 2012, 8:11 PM EDT) -- The European Union on Wednesday unveiled plans to widen and strengthen its regulation of medical devices in the wake of a scandal over the safety of fraudulent silicone breast implants manufactured by now-defunct French company Poly Implant Prothese.

Under the terms of the proposal, EU legislation overseeing medical devices would be made stricter, extended to cover things like cosmetic implants, and aligned with international guidelines to facilitate trade. National assessment bodies would also get greater powers to oversee manufacturers and would be urged to coordinate efforts...
