Aetna To Pay Record Fine For Providing Abortion Coverage

Law360, New York (September 26, 2012, 8:03 PM EDT) -- Aetna Life Insurance Co. will fork over $1.5 million to Missouri for covering elective abortions under standard health insurance policies and for other violations of state law — the largest insurance fine in Missouri history, state officials said Wednesday.

The sixth largest health insurer in Missouri admitted that it routinely provided coverage for elective abortions when state law requires that customers specifically request and pay extra for that coverage, according to Missouri Insurance Director John Huff.
