EU Antitrust Boss Again Doubts €1.3B Hutchison-Orange Deal

Law360, New York (October 2, 2012, 1:29 PM EDT) -- The European Commission's antitrust chief expressed more doubt Tuesday that Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. could find a way to make its proposed €1.3 billion acquisition of mobile provider Orange Austria Telecommunication GmbH acceptable to regulators.

Following similar statements at a speech last month in Washington, Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said the deal — under a full EC investigation — would reduce the number of players in the market for cellphone service in Austria to just three.
