Another HIPAA Violation Shows Costs Of Noncompliance

Law360, New York (October 10, 2012, 2:02 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently announced its fourth settlement in 2012 regarding violations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act security rule.[1] The settlement, which reflects increased enforcement activity relating to health data, includes a resolution agreement between Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Associates Inc. (collectively MEEI) and HHS stemming from the theft of an unencrypted laptop containing electronic personal health information (ePHI) of MEEI patients.
