Pa. Supremes To Review Usury Law In $2.3M Tax Fee Suit

Law360, Philadelphia (October 4, 2012, 3:31 PM EDT) -- The Pennsylvania Supreme Court said Wednesday it will reconsider a $2.3 million class action judgment against a Pennsylvania law firm, in a case likely to determine the scope of a law firm's ability to charge fees to delinquent taxpayers when acting as third-party tax collectors.

The court elected to hear an appeal by Portnoff Law Associates challenging an earlier ruling by the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court, which in July 2011 upheld a trial court’s ruling that found the practice violated Pennsylvania usury laws. The trial court awarded...
