FDA, Interpol Shut Down 18K Illegal Pharmacy Sites

Law360, New York (October 4, 2012, 2:57 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday that an international crackdown on illegal online pharmacies has resulted in the seizure of $10.5 million worth of prescription drugs including knockoff Tamiflu and Viagra, the shutdown of more than 18,000 pharmacy websites and dozens of arrests.

The FDA worked with international regulators and law enforcement agencies from 100 countries in Operation Pangea V. In one week, the operation took action against more than 4,000 online pharmacies. Seventy-nine people were arrested or are under investigation, according to Interpol....
