Pa. PUC, Utility Reach Settlement Over Deadly Gas Explosion

Law360, Philadelphia (October 4, 2012, 5:41 PM EDT) -- A Pennsylvania gas utility agreed Wednesday to a $386,000 settlement with the state's Public Utility Commission over a 2011 explosion that caused the deaths of five Allentown residents and destroyed or severely damaged eight homes.

UGI Utilities Inc. and the PUC asked an administrative judge to approve the settlement, which, in addition to the penalty, obligates the utility to replace all cast iron gas mains in its three services territories over the next 14 years, a significant acceleration to the company's existing 50-year replacement trend....
