GOP Wants HHS To Justify $23M Malpractice Research Grants

Law360, New York (October 17, 2012, 5:52 PM EDT) -- Three GOP lawmakers on Wednesday asked the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to justify $23.2 million given out in research grants for medical malpractice reform, saying none of the money appeared to have gone toward its original research goals.

According to the letter, President Barack Obama had launched an initiative to reduce health care costs in a September 2009 speech to Congress. The speech had given the “clear impression” the research grants would be spent on investigating “traditional” malpractice reforms such as the reduction...
