Abbot Sues Newcomer Over Diabetes Device

Law360, New York (August 16, 2005, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Two rivals in the diabetes care industry are facing off in a patent dispute over technology allowing diabetics to monitor their glucose levels.

Health care products maker Abbot Diabetes Care, Inc. is suing San Diego-based market newcomer DexCom, Inc., which has been testing and marketing a device that allegedly infringes four of Abbot’s patents.

The DexCom device allows a glucose monitor to be embedded in a patient’s body, where it records and transmits glucose levels to an external device on a regular basis. Chicago-based Abbott alleges...
