Meningitis Outbreak Exposes Oversight Failures, Markey Says

Law360, New York (October 29, 2012, 1:46 PM EDT) -- Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., released a report Monday that found state pharmacy boards nationwide have failed in their duty to oversee the safety of drugs made by compounding pharmacies such as the one linked to a deadly meningitis outbreak.

Markey, a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, announced soon after the outbreak started that he planned to introduce legislation to strengthen the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's oversight of compounding pharmacies. The regulation of the pharmacies is mostly left to state pharmacy boards....
