Markey Rolls Out Reform Bill In Wake Of Meningitis Outbreak

Law360, New York (November 1, 2012, 8:25 PM EDT) -- Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., unveiled legislation Thursday that would enshrine into law the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's ability to oversee compounding pharmacies that produce drugs in bulk, an attempt to overhaul the regulatory scheme that led to a deadly meningitis outbreak.

The Verifying Authority and Legality In Drug Compounding Act of 2012 would leave the regulation of so-called traditional compounding — the making of a drug that is not commercially available, based on an individualized prescription — to state pharmacy boards.
