AMA Supports Blocking Florida's 'Gun Gag' On Doctors

Law360, New York (November 6, 2012, 2:24 PM EST) -- The American Medical Association on Monday urged the Eleventh Circuit to uphold a lower court’s partial invalidation of Florida's "gun gag" law restricting doctors from asking patients about firearm ownership, saying it harms free speech, endangers lives and doesn’t support Second Amendment rights.

In a friend-of-the-court brief, the AMA denounced the Firearm Owners’ Privacy Act, which a district court partly wiped out in June, for curtailing physicians’ ability to learn whether patients — including those with mental disorders or young children — possess dangerous weapons....
