USDA Pulls Plug On Produce Safety Program

Law360, New York (November 9, 2012, 6:53 PM EST) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture ordered state laboratories on Friday to start shutting down a produce testing program that has routinely led to recalls over listeria and other contamination but has drawn criticism from food companies as being duplicative and ineffective.

The agency told state agriculture departments that it should stop collecting samples for its Microbiological Data Program by Friday. It expects the testing of all remaining samples to be completed by the end of December.
