Roquette To Pay US $4M In Waste Discharge Settlement

Law360, New York (November 13, 2012, 5:18 PM EST) -- Starch producer Roquette America Inc. on Tuesday agreed to pay to U.S. government $4.1 million to settle a Clean Water Act suit accusing the company of violating federal permits and illegally releasing industrial waste and other pollutants into the Mississippi River from its Iowa grain processing plant.

Roquette has exceeded its permit limits for biochemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, nickel, pH and temperature more than 1,300 times, and discharged more than 250,000 gallons of untreated waste into local waters without proper authorization, according to the...
