Pa. Hospital Merger Killed After FTC Broaches Challenge

Law360, Philadelphia (November 19, 2012, 4:57 PM EST) -- Reading Health System on Monday dropped its proposed acquisition of Surgical Institute of Reading LP, after an announcement Friday that the Federal Trade Commission and the Pennsylvania attorney general's office intended to challenge the merger.

The Pennsylvania attorney general had planned to file a request for a preliminary injunction Monday in federal court to stop the merger, contending that it would increase health care costs and reduce quality of care for employers and residents.
