FDA Reviews Energy Drink Safety After Death Reports

Law360, New York (November 27, 2012, 6:24 PM EST) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said in a letter made public Tuesday that it was reviewing the safety of energy drinks, particularly when consumed by children, following reports linking the caffeinated products to consumer deaths.

Though products with caffeine have generally been proven safe, energy drinks such as those made by Monster Beverage Corp. and Red Bull GmbH are relatively new to the marketplace, FDA Acting Associate Commissioner for Legislation Michele Mital said in a letter dated Nov. 21.
