EU Panel Wants Formaldehyde Rated As 'Presumed' Carcinogen

Law360, New York (December 11, 2012, 8:39 PM EST) -- The European Union's chemicals watchdog proposed classifying formaldehyde as a presumed human carcinogen Friday, a less severe rating than the one adopted by U.S. regulators last year amid litigation over the health risks posed by the substance.

The European Chemicals Agency's Committee for Risk Assessment rejected a proposal to classify the substance as a known carcinogen, the label put on formaldehyde by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services's National Toxicology Program in a June 2011 report.
