Mont. High Court Blocks Equal Benefits For Same-Sex Couples

Law360, New York (December 17, 2012, 8:39 PM EST) -- The Montana Supreme Court on Monday rejected an "overly broad" request by same-sex couples to receive the same benefits as married couples, but said a more narrowly tailored challenge targeting specific state laws could proceed.

In a 4-3 decision, the court said the broad request to amend Montana's statutory structure to guarantee equal treatment for gay couples could lead to "confusion and further litigation."
