EU Accepts Rio Tinto's Aluminum Antitrust Moves

Law360, New York (December 20, 2012, 3:40 PM EST) -- The European Union's competition watchdog said Thursday it would end its antitrust probe into Rio Tinto Alcan Inc., which began before the merger that formed the company, after accepting its promise to ease restrictions on licensees of its aluminum smelting technology.

The decision will wrap up the regulator's nearly six-year probe into claims that Montreal-based Rio Tinto forced licensees of its smelting technology to also purchase the company's handling equipment for aluminum smelters, called pot tending assemblies.
