Lawmakers Call For Probe Of Coal Export Royalty Payments

Law360, New York (January 4, 2013, 8:37 PM EST) -- The top Democrat and Republican on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee pressed the Obama administration Friday to crack down on mining companies that exploit financial loopholes to avoid paying full royalties for overseas coal exports.

In a letter to to the Interior Department, Sens. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, cited news reports indicating companies have dodged tens of millions of dollars in royalty payments for coal mined on federal lands and called on regulators to address the issue.
