Fed. Circ. Throws Out Pet ID Patent Claims

Law360, New York (January 8, 2013, 3:34 PM EST) -- The Federal Circuit on Tuesday rejected claims asserted in an Avid Identification Systems Inc. patent related to electronic animal ID tags used to locate missing pets, affirming a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office decision that the claims were anticipated and obvious.

In a 2-1 decision, the court said the USPTO's Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences hadn't made an error in rejecting Avid's patent claims. The patent is related to radio-frequency identification, or RFID, tag technology that stores a unique identification number used to identify pets....
