Medicare OKs 106 New ACOs, Nearly Doubling Ranks

Law360, New York (January 10, 2013, 7:13 PM EST) -- Medicare has inked contracts with 106 new accountable care organizations authorized under health reform, nearly doubling the number of arrangements in which providers coordinate services in hopes of improving patient outcomes and trimming the program’s bloated finances, federal officials said Thursday.

The announcement brings to 250 the number of ACOs that have been established with the aim of cutting down on errors and duplicative procedures that harm beneficiary health and leave Medicare awash in increasing amounts of red ink.
