Obama Signs Medicare Secondary Payer Reforms

Law360, New York (January 11, 2013, 6:18 PM EST) -- President Barack Obama signed a bill Thursday that will change the way Medicare recovers money for health care services from secondary payers, in a bid to speed up settlements to beneficiaries from other payers like car insurance companies.

The provision, known as the Strengthening Medicare and Repaying Taxpayers, or SMART, Act, sets deadlines for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to inform beneficiaries of how much the agency is expected to be reimbursed from an outside settlement.
