Caterpillar Loses Patent Fight Over Diesel-Engine Technology

Law360, New York (September 26, 2005, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In a second defeat for Caterpillar Inc., the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has once again sided with an inventor who took on the heavy-equipment maker’s recently awarded patent for diesel-engine technology worth billions of dollars.

The USPTO ruled that inventor Clyde Bryant, a retired chemist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and currently the chairman of Entec Engine Corp, had invented most of the claims at the center of a patent awarded to Caterpillar last year.
