Pa. PUC Ups Utility's Penalty In Deal Over Deadly Gas Blast

Law360, New York (January 24, 2013, 5:34 PM EST) -- Pennsylvania's Public Utility Commission on Thursday boosted the monetary penalty imposed on gas utility UGI Utilities Inc. from $386,000 to $500,000 as part of a settlement over a 2011 explosion that caused the deaths of five Allentown residents and destroyed or severely damaged eight homes.

The PUC unanimously approved a motion to modify a settlement between UGI and the regulator reached in October that not only increases UGI's financial penalty, but also requires the utility to develop a pilot program designed to test enhanced gas leak...
