Medicare Paid $120M For Inmates, Illegal Immigrants: OIG

Law360, New York (January 24, 2013, 4:35 PM EST) -- Medicare improperly paid more than $120 million for health care for prison inmates and illegal immigrants from 2009 to 2011, according to reports released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of the Inspector General.

Federal law prohibits Medicare from paying for services for inmates and illegal immigrants in most instances. Yet the program paid health care providers nearly $34 million for medical services to approximately 11,600 inmates and nearly $92 million for medical services to approximately 2,600 illegal immigrants from 2009...
