Law Prof. Inches Toward NY High Court Seat After Testy Vote

Law360, New York (February 5, 2013, 2:19 PM EST) -- The New York Senate's judiciary committee on Tuesday advanced law professor Jenny Rivera's nomination to the state's high court to the full Senate after Republicans decried her lack of experience and Democrats suggested the opposition was motivated by race or ethnicity.

Rivera's nomination to the New York Court of Appeals passed through the 23-member Judiciary Committee on the strength of 14 total yes votes — 11 from Democrats — with three Republicans voting yes “without recommendation.” Eight Republicans voted no and one absence was recorded....
