EU Law Pushes For Quieter Cars, But Noisier Hybrids

Law360, New York (February 6, 2013, 3:41 PM EST) -- European lawmakers approved legislation Wednesday that aims to set new limits on the noise levels emitted by most cars, while simultaneously directing the European Commission to consider requiring hybrid and electric cars to make more noise in order to avoid accidents.

High levels of traffic noise can impair the functioning of body organs and potentially increase the risk of heart attacks, high blood pressure and other conditions, according to a draft bill approved by European Parliament members by a vote of 401 to 228.
