Brazil's Antitrust Head Wants Health Care Merger Barred

Law360, New York (February 11, 2013, 5:10 PM EST) -- The head of Brazil's antitrust watchdog pushed Friday to block health care benefits administrator Qualicorp SA's recently completed purchase of a majority stake in rival Alianca Administracao de Beneficios, warning that the deal would give Qualicorp control of the vast majority of the market.

The general superintendence of the Administrative Council for Economic Defense, or CADE, urged the agency to reject the deal, which gave Qualicorp a 60 percent stake in two units of Grupo Alianca.
