Union Carbide, Hexion Lose $8.2M in Asbestos Case

By Marc Tracy (December 3, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- A former pipe-fitter has won $8.2 million from Hexion Specialty Chemicals Inc. and Union Carbide Corp., a subsidiary of the Dow Chemical Co. A jury found the companies liable for the plaintiff's exposure to asbestos and his subsequent development of mesothelioma.

A jury in the 122nd District Court, in Galveston County, Texas, found for plaintiff Oliver D. Smith and his wife Peggy Ann Bowen Smith on Nov. 21, according to court documents. The sum includes $7.93 million in damages from the defendants and $275,000 in punitive damages levied against Hexion.
