Shell Arctic Drill Rig Plagued By Engine, Safety Problems

Law360, New York (February 22, 2013, 5:33 PM EST) -- One of the two vessels Royal Dutch Shell PLC plans to use for offshore drilling in the Arctic suffers from systemic engine problems, a faulty exhaust system, fire hazards and other safety violations, according to a U.S. Coast Guard inspection made public Friday.

The November inspection revealed that the Shell Noble Discoverer's engine wasn't strong enough to propel the vessel in all ocean conditions, and that numerous engine components had missing or broken parts.
